PAT or portable appliance testing is the process of examining electrical appliances for safety. There are many reasons to carry out PAT tests, the most important of which is to ensure the safety of your employees and customers. The HSE advises that 25% of all electrical accidents reported involve portable appliances. In order to be compliant with the electricity at work regulations, regular testing and inspection of appliances should be implemented.
What should be tested
- Portable appliances such as- Kettle, Iron, Toaster
- Office equipment such as- Computers, Printers
- Movable equipment such as-TV, Lamps
- Hand held appliances such as-Power tools, Hair dryer,
- Stationary appliances such as-Fridge freezers, Washing machines, Ovens
When should it be tested
The frequency of testing and re testing is determined by the appliance itself, where it is located and its purpose. For instance an extension lead used in an office would require testing much less frequently than an extension lead used on a construction site. All risk assessments are carried out according to the IET code of practice for the in service inspection of portable appliances.
